Our Chief Technical Officer, Marlon Kerim Weinstabl, attended the 7th Mare Forum Mykonos 2024, held on Friday, 30th of August, on the picturesque island of Mykonos. The event gathered key stakeholders from the shipping and yachting industries to explore the theme “Pioneering the Future of Shipping and Yachting - Opportunities.”
This annual forum attracts shipping executives, shipowners, managers, charterers, capital providers, energy executives, regulators, maritime lawyers, consultants, shipbuilders, classification societies, and other service providers from around the world. It serves as a platform for knowledge exchange and strategic discussions aimed at advancing the maritime sector.
In his address, Marlon Kerim Weinstabl highlighted the critical role of sustainability and climate change in shaping the future of the maritime industry. He advocated for hybrid energy solutions, focusing on the use of biofuels as a more feasible alternative to full electrification. He also touched upon the long-term economic viability of slow steaming, which reduces fuel consumption and emissions.
Marlon also emphasized the importance of long-term sustainability and maintenance of resources, proposing that charters should reconsider age restrictions and allow well-maintained vessels to trade longer. He pointed out that each new building consumes significant resources, which could otherwise be conserved by continuing to use existing, well-maintained ships. Rather than always pushing for new vessels, he suggested that clients and charters focus on the efficient and sustainable use of current fleets, which can significantly reduce the environmental impact and contribute to a more sustainable maritime industry.
Additionally, Marlon discussed the current shipping and trade market outlook, noting the need for industry consolidation amid years of depressed markets. He expressed concerns over the overbuilding of container ships and the potential impact on global trade if alternative routes, such as the proposed train network from China to Europe, become more viable.
The 7th Mare Forum Mykonos 2024 provided a valuable opportunity for industry leaders to connect, share knowledge, and explore strategies for a sustainable and prosperous future. Armona Denizcilik remains committed to being at the forefront of these discussions, continually striving to innovate and contributing to the global maritime community.
