On 16:05 UTC, the Atlantis Armona detected a small inflatable boat carrying 77 refugees in the Mediterranean, off the coast of Spain. The Atlantis Armona's crew promptly contacted the Spanish Maritime Safety Agency, providing every possible assistance to ensure the successful rescue of these individuals. The search and rescue operation was a great success.
The "Centro Regional de Coordinación de Salvamento de Almeria" expressed their gratitude and appreciation to Armona Denizcilik for their assistance and sensitivity in the operation, as seen in the following letter:
"Dear Captain,
I would like to express on behalf of the Spanish Maritime Safety Agency our deepest gratitude and highest appreciation for your assistance in the SAR operation undertaken this afternoon at the Mediterranean Sea, in which 77 lives were saved.
Your vessel informed around 16:05 UTC to ALMERIA MRCC that a small inflatable boat adrift with several migrant people on board was in her vicinity remaining in that position until the arrival of a rescue boat about two hours later.
The decisive and efficient intervention taken by you and your crew was absolutely crucial and avoided a high risk situation for these people as well as a probably prolonged and costly Search and Rescue operation.
Best regards,
MRCC Almería"
