To further enhance the antifouling performance of the Atlantis Almeria, a high-solids, advanced fouling defense coating will be applied to the propeller. This innovative coating utilizes ActiGuard® technology, which combines the power of advanced hydrogel silicone and an efficient biocide to create a robust antifouling barrier. This will significantly extend the fouling-free period, reducing maintenance requirements and improving operational efficiency.
The preparations for this advanced coating application have been intensive. The propeller shaft, including the hub and blades, was meticulously removed from the vessel and disassembled in a dedicated workshop. There, the components underwent a thorough inspection for wear and tear, followed by a comprehensive overhaul that included the replacement of all seals. Additionally, the blades were meticulously ground with sandpaper in the workshop. Finally, upon refitting to the ship, the blades receive a final sanding with a special grid made from walnut shells. This unique grid creates an ideal surface texture for optimal adhesion of the epoxy layer that serves as the base for the high-performance antifouling coating.
